Business Management Books: Recommended for Your Personal Library

For those of us who have chosen careers in business, it makes sense to have all the business reference books you need on hand. Therefore, when I give speeches to MBA students at universities, I often recommend that they start building their business library now. In fact, my business library has between 3,500 and 4,000 books, and lately I’ve been going through it and giving away the books I no longer need since I’ve been retired.

I’m not releasing all the books yet, though, because they say the business itch runs deep and if it decides to show itself again, then I want to be ready. So with this truth said, let me recommend some of the books that stay on my personal business shelves that have to do with business management. If you don’t have these books, I recommend you consider them for yourself:

“The One-Minute Manager Gets Fit” by Kenneth Blanchard, PhD. – 1986

“Market Driven Management: Recipes for Survival in a Troubled World” – B. Charles Ames and James D. Hlavacek – 1989.

Market-driven management is the key to winning in the new fast-paced market paradigm, with fierce competition, global markets, and “exploding technologies and higher research and development costs,” the author states.

“Bringing IT to the Bottom Line: Managing for Incremental Gains” by Richard S. Sloma – 1987.

This book explains how business managers can grow their businesses and manage through goal setting, careful evaluation, and repetition of that process. It is not a get-rich-quick way of doing business and the author makes it clear that it requires discipline, but he assures the reader that this way works.

He talks a lot about business ‘profit’ planning, after all people are in business to make money. In the second half of the book, she devotes her time to the important task of measuring financial performance and how to use this knowledge to project, set new goals, and continue to refine the money-making process—the bottom line.

I wish you all the best in getting started and contributing the best business books to your business library, and I wish you continued success in your business career, whether you are a manager, corporate executive, or intrepid small business entrepreneur.

Why managers should develop effective listening skills

The best leaders share a common secret: they lead successfully because they listen effectively. Good listening, however, seems to be a rare managerial skill. Unfortunately, many people work with leaders who interrupt, are rude and rude, and devalue their direct reports. Imagine how your negative behavior damages the morale, productivity and effectiveness of your organizations.

Manny Steil and I have spent more than 50 years of combined work researching, writing, consulting, teaching, and training in the areas of listening and leadership. Over the past three years, we’ve interviewed more than 100 leaders from around the world, including CEOs and frontline leaders, educators, business people, pastors, military officers, pilots, celebrities, and homemakers. Regardless of the role they play, these individuals understand the definition of listening leadership: guiding self and others toward positive outcomes for the betterment of all through better sensing, interpreting, evaluating, storing, and responding to messages. Based on our research, we have developed 10 golden rules for effective listening. Here, we’ll focus on the first rule, which is critical to both listening and leading: build a strong foundation.

Do you hear what I hear?
Leaders who listen recognize that listening and leading are inseparable and that listening is the best way to learn the true needs, expectations, and desires of your followers. Peter Nulty, a member of Fortune Magazine’s National Business Hall of Fame, aptly observed: “Of all the leadership skills, listening is the most valuable and one of the least understood. Most captains of industry listen only to times, and they remain ordinary. leaders, but a few, the great ones, never stop listening”. As he focuses on building a strong foundation for success, he understands these five universal listening facts:
Listening is our main communication activity. More than half a century of research in the field of listening shows that we spend 80 percent of our waking hours communicating. At least 45 percent of that time is spent listening. For leaders, the total time spent listening is even higher. Numerous studies identify listening as the most critical skill for leadership success, and employers consistently rank it as one of the top five skills they expect from employees. As leadership responsibilities grow, the importance of listening increases dramatically.

Listening is an innate, learned and impossible behavior. Listening is driven by a combination of instinctive, inherent, and innate forces. Listening, in all its complexity, is also a measurable, observable and improvable behaviour. Research reveals that most people do not listen well. Immediately after listening to a 10-minute presentation, the average listener has heard, correctly understood, correctly evaluated, stored, and adequately responded to about half of what was said. Within 48 hours, that drops to a final effectiveness level of 25 percent. However, the evidence shows that, with effort, the effectiveness of listening can be improved. As a result of the guided effort, listening leaders have improved their awareness and attitude, increased their knowledge, and improved listening skills.

Listening badly is expensive. Although listening is critical to the success of all leaders, few have received training on how to be good listeners. As a result, many have developed costly and self-defeating listening habits. The costs are staggering. Ineffective and inefficient listening results in extraordinary losses of time, money, productivity, customer service, self-esteem, reputation, opportunities, and more. On the other hand, effective, efficient, and productive listeners benefit in many ways.

Responsible and active listeners are productive listeners. Unfortunately, most leaders operate under the assumption that it is the speaker’s responsibility to ensure successful communication, so they become passive listeners. Our experience clearly shows that the passive listener is always a poor listener and an ineffective leader. Rather, outstanding leaders take responsibility for the success of all communications to and from them. By listening, these leaders show an attitude of responsibility and exhibit concrete behaviors of productive and involved activity.

Listening can only be mastered to the extent that it has been developed. Many listeners delude themselves into the assumption that they can hear well when they really need to, want to, or have to. Could not be farther from the truth. In reality, listeners can only “will” to listen to the level at which they have developed such skills. Second, the assumption that you can do more if necessary interferes with the investment needed to focus, grow, and improve. Productive listeners understand their strengths and limitations and constantly strive for higher levels of performance.

Leadership by listening in practice
John DiBiaggio, one of the many listening leaders we interviewed, has spent his career in higher education administration, serving as president of several institutions, including Michigan State and Tufts universities and the University of Connecticut. “I’ve often said that you show your intelligence not by what you say, but by what you ask for,” says DiBiaggio. “If you know how to listen, you will concentrate on what the other person is trying to tell you.” For example, when experienced managers see certain situations recurring in the workplace, they must be willing to listen to other staff members and consider unique approaches. “If students on campus start a protest, for example, you might say to yourself, ‘I’ve seen protests before and I know what to do,'” DiBiaggio says. “However, other staff members who are also experiencing the protest might have other ideas about what you should do in that situation.

I had to teach myself to listen to what people were saying in every situation and not jump to a conclusion right away.” Listening and leading go hand in hand. Exceptional leaders focus intensely on the value of building a strong foundation of listening and leading. you will join their ranks.

What to do when you have been charged with driving under the influence

You wake up and realize that the police pulled you over last night. You got arrested for DUI and your license was punched. After giving you a bunch of paperwork, they make you feel at home. Now what?

After the initial shock of being accused of a crime has passed, you will need to start making decisions about what to do. There are two distinct areas that you will need to focus on: the DUI court process and the Licensing Department.

The following steps will help you get off to a good start:

Organize your paperwork

1. Get a file folder to hold all your documents. This may seem unnecessary, but you’ll be glad you did it later.

2. Find your quote. It’s the little yellow piece of paper. This will tell you the date and time of your Settlement. Mark this date on your calendar, as you will need to be in court on that date and time. We will talk about how to prepare for your arraignment later.

3. Locate the Licensing Department’s Hearing Request Form and review it.

Write what happened

While everything is fresh in your mind, write down what happened. The natural human reaction is to write down only the significant events, such as how the officer treated you. However, his lawyer will want to know what he was doing before he started drinking. Begin the page with “To my attorney” and then write responses to: Where were you? Who was with you? When did you start drinking? How much did you have to eat? How much did you have to drink? What did you drink and for how long? Do you have receipts? Can you get them? List the entire time period including before, during, and after the arrest.

DOL Hearing Request

Licensing will attempt to suspend your license once the officer sends them a Breath or Blood Test Report. The Department will automatically suspend your license 60 days after your arrest, unless you contest the suspension.

Among all the documentation that the officer gives you will be an Administrative Hearing Request. He only has 30 days to submit his application and it will cost him $200. There should also be a fee waiver form that you can fill out if you are unable to pay the $200.

A common strategy is to wait until the end of the 30 days before submitting your request. The idea is that since the DOL has to schedule your hearing before the 60 days are up, taking the full 30 days (or to be safe, 29 days) will make it more difficult for them to schedule a hearing on time. Be careful not to wait more than 30 days to request your hearing because the Department will deny your request if it is postmarked more than 30 days from the arrest. Another good idea is to submit your certified application. That way, you’ll have proof that you mailed it in a timely manner.

go to court

Going to court can be extremely stressful. However, knowing what to expect can greatly reduce that stress level.

Your first court appearance, called an arraignment, will probably be the only time you will have to face the judge alone. Whether he feels he is guilty of the crime or not, he always pleads not guilty. He doesn’t feel that pleading not guilty, if he thinks he is, is lying to the court. What you are really saying is that you want to take the time to: First, see if the State can prove you guilty and Second, even if they can, decide what punishment is appropriate given the facts of what happened and your criminal conduct. story (or lack thereof). A judge will not punish you for taking your time deciding what to do with a criminal charge.

A lawyer will likely be with you for the rest of your court dates. While it is entirely your choice whether or not to have an attorney, very few people have the skill to successfully defend themselves against any criminal charge, let alone one as complex as today’s Driving Under the Influence charge.

Having a lawyer help you with your case will often mean you don’t need to talk to the judge, other than to answer questions like: Do you understand what is happening and is it okay with you? Your attorney should be able to explain exactly what the issues are in your case and what will happen in court.

If you do not understand what is happening in your case or what the issues are, talk to your attorney. It is his job to explain everything to you. The mark of a good lawyer is one that can keep you informed throughout the process and make you part of the decision-making process.

You will probably return to court several more times during the course of your DUI case. The number of times you have to return and what happens on those dates in court is a function of the number of legal issues (defenses) in your case and how well the plea negotiations are going.

The goal of any competent attorney is to provide you with options on how to resolve your case. These options range from going to a jury trial to pleading guilty to something, preferably to a reduced charge.

Whatever the options in your case, remember that it is up to you to decide which option to take, so make sure you understand all the ramifications of each option before you decide.

DOL hearings

The hearing you request from the Department of Licensing (DOL) is very different from the types of hearings or trials you will receive in court. Over the years, our court system has developed rules designed to ensure that everyone receives a fair hearing. The Washington State Legislature has decided that such safeguards are inconsistent with how they want the DOL to operate. As a result, the hearing examiner at a DOL hearing must:

1. Assume the veracity of the evidence of the prosecution or the department. RCW 46.61.506(4)(b). This means that if the officer writes something in your report and you testify that the officer is wrong, then the hearing examiner must believe the officer.

2. If a sworn report is submitted to DOL, that report is considered “prima facie evidence” that the officer had “reasonable grounds to believe that the person had been driving or was in actual physical control of a motor vehicle within this state under the influence of alcoholic beverages or intoxicating drugs…” RCW 46.20.308(8). You may notice that the officer’s sworn report does not actually have to say that he was intoxicated (or anything else), but the law says that the hearing examiner must treat you as if he were.

There are other differences, of course, such as dispensing with the Rules of Evidence (WAC 308-103-120) and not requiring witnesses against you to be present. However, using only the two points listed above means that the only way to prevail in a DOL hearing is: 1. If the DOL is unable to schedule the hearing within 60 days or 2. The officer fails to file a sworn brief.

license issues

Whether you lose your license due to Licensing action or because you were convicted of a crime, do not drive until Licensing reinstates you.

The amount of time you will lose your license depends on factors such as: the amount of prior history, the level of alcohol in your body, and whether or not there was a refusal of the breath or blood test. Suspension periods are listed under Penalties for DUI [http://www.cahoonlawoffice.com/duipenalties.htm]

The Licensing Department will notify you in writing of the things necessary to get your license back. Generally, this means that you must:

1. Wait for the hang time

2. Pay a fee to be reinstated

3. Show proof of SR22 insurance

4. Show proof of having completed an alcohol assessment

Getting caught driving before your license is reinstated can be very serious and lead to both jail time and an additional license suspension.

During the suspension period, you may apply for an occupational or restricted driver’s license. If approved, this temporary license will allow you to drive to and from work. However, it will not replace a normal license, since it authorizes driving only for private purposes.

Hiring a lawyer

The most important attribute of a lawyer is the ability to communicate clearly. If you can’t understand what your attorney is saying, chances are no one else can. Choose someone who knows the law, can explain it to you in a way you understand, and is able to balance the ability to negotiate with the ability to fight aggressively for you.

The Vanishing Pension Plan: Identifying the Risks and How to Avoid Them

Once upon a time, the American Dream was pretty simple to quantify. A person would get a high school or college education, get a job at a big company or an agency of their state or federal government, and work there for 30 or 40 years. They would buy a house, pay for it, and retire with a guaranteed income and health insurance for the rest of their lives. For most Americans, this is a vision of the past.

Over the past decade, thousands of US companies and institutions have abandoned their defined benefit pension plans in favor of unguaranteed defined contribution plans, such as 401(k)s and 403(bs). With an aging workforce, such a move has allowed companies to save vast amounts of money by removing the obligation to fund large pension obligations, particularly in times of falling interest rates and a volatile stock market. According to Edward Wolff, a professor of economics at New York University, “Things are not looking good for retirees with the collapse of defined benefit plans. It was a piece of the puzzle that kept retirees afloat. In 20 years, the only people with these plans will be government employees.”

This trend has forced employees to become their own money managers. Unfortunately, the average worker is woefully unprepared for the responsibility of such a task. Most 401(k) and 403(b) plans limit the investment selections available to plan participants. With few exceptions, an employee can only access this money upon changing jobs or retiring. Despite attending occasional employer-sponsored educational workshops, defined contribution plan providers generally do not provide investment advice, leaving the employee to make important investment decisions on their own. People find themselves responsible for managing their greatest asset and making sure it lasts for the rest of their lives.

With interest rates at an all-time low, huge swings in the stock and commodity markets, mounting inflation pressures, and ever-rising health care costs, what’s a person to do? As one reaches the preservation and distribution phases of the investment life, it is critical that one’s investments be structured in a way that minimizes or eliminates portfolio losses and positions your portfolio for guaranteed income streams that cannot be survived. . With more than 10,000 baby boomers turning 65 every day, the insurance industry has recognized the challenges inherent in the new economic reality we live in and has created a wealth of options for people to create their own pension plans. “guaranteed”. Structuring of these guaranteed income streams should be done with the help of a qualified financial professional, such as a registered investment adviser.

Kicking Horse Ski Resort: 7 Smart Tips to Save Money on Your Next Vacation

If you’ve never heard of Kicking Horse Ski Resort in British Columbia, it’s not surprising.

That’s because Kicking Horse Ski Resort (formerly known as Whitetooth Ski Area) is the first four-season ski resort to open in the Rocky Mountain region in 25 years. In recent years, the Kicking Horse Ski area has grown from a modest ski slope to a world-class resort.

Visitors to Kicking Horse Ski Resort can’t help but rave about the monumental powder season dumps, massive vertical terrain and laid-back atmosphere guaranteed to make you wonder why it took you so long to find this snow haven.

Of course, paradise always comes at a price.

Fortunately, I’ve put together a number of tips to help you save money on your next Kicking Horse Ski vacation.

Tip #1: Avoid Booking Your Kicking Horse Ski Resort Vacation During Major Holidays

While it’s often more convenient to flee the cities during major holidays, it pays to be flexible on your chosen days. This is because accommodation prices often skyrocket during big holidays and drop again right after. Booking your accommodation, flights, and lift tickets well in advance at Kicking Horse Ski Resort can give you time to figure out the best times to go.

Tip #2: Book your accommodation at Kicking Horse Ski Resort directly with the owners

Sure, you could stay in a hotel. But consider booking your Kicking Horse ski accommodation directly with the owners and you’ll avoid unnecessary middle-agent fees and taxes, while often paying a cheaper nightly rate.

Plus, you’ll experience Kicking Horse Ski Area from the comfort of a fully furnished condo, complete with equipped kitchen, television, and other amenities included. And don’t forget that most landlords have free parking, while most rental managers and hotels have additional parking fees per night.

Tip #3: Share the cost and invite a friend (or two) to Kicking Horse Ski Resort

You’ve probably heard that two’s company and three’s a crowd. But the total price of your reservation drops dramatically if you decide to share the cost of your Kicking Horse ski accommodation with a few other friends. Getting a larger property and adding two extra people could save you a few hundred dollars spreading the cost. Plus, what’s a ski resort vacation without a few friends to experience it with?

Tip #4 – Pack the entertainment

Keeping the kids entertained between ski runs can be an expensive affair. Movie and TV rentals are generally a fail-safe alternative to dating. But you should also pack a number of fun alternatives to help out in slow periods, like some classic board games or a deck of cards. After all, there’s nothing like a night of Scrabble or Trivial Pursuit after a day exploring the Kicking Horse Ski Area.

Tip #5 Prepare your own meals

This is a killer. Eating out is generally considered one of the quickest ways to burn a hole in your wallet. The easiest alternative is to book your Kicking Horse ski accommodation directly and use your fully equipped kitchen to prepare some of your meals afterwards. Don’t you have much of a chef? Don’t worry, try looking up some simple recipes online before you go and you will be surprised. (In a good way).

Tip #6 Look for promotions in brochures and tourist flyers at Kicking Horse Ski Resort

As you wander the streets and explore the shops at Kicking Horse Ski Resort, keep an eye out for helpful guidebooks and maps that often include discount coupons for various activities and restaurants. At the end of your trip, you could end up saving a worthwhile amount.

Tip #7 Buy a Snowmax card

If you’re a resident of BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, you can choose a Snowmax card for worthwhile savings. The card comes loaded with 4 free days at Panorama or Kicking Horse Ski Resort (you can split the days however you like). Then, for the rest of the season, you continue to get $15 off future lift tickets.

3 Ways to Watch Live TV Shows on My PC

There are 3 ways that I can watch live TV shows on my PC and I am going to share with you how to do it here.

Using the PCTV device

The PCTV stick is a form of hardware that allows me to watch TV shows on my PC through an Internet connection. It comes in a PCI and USB card version. I personally prefer the USB version as it can be used on both a PC and laptop, plus I don’t have to open my computer. Watching TV on PC with PCTV device involves only a one-time investment. You pay for the hardware and that’s it. However, it will still cost you over a hundred bucks at least.

Free online channels

There are online streaming websites that present live TV and I started using them to watch TV shows on my PC at first. However, being free, programs get cut or stopped from time to time due to slow video loading. Also, the channel selection is limited if they ever appear. I’m guessing this is all due to a limited bandwidth that runs out quickly with many people accessing at the same time.

If you are satisfied with mediocre video quality and occasional stops between shows with an extremely limited selection of channels, then free online channels will suffice for you.

You can download a toolbar that allows you to watch live TV online for free at toolbar.class-ad.com.

satellite tv software

I can also watch TV shows on my PC using satellite TV software. This is my personal favourite. Because? First of all, there is no need for hardware. All I need is the software, my computer, and an internet connection so I don’t have to worry about losing any devices. Second, I can download and use the software immediately online. Third, I only pay a one-time fee of no more than $50 for the software. Fourth, I can choose from more than 3,000 channels around the world. This is by far the best in terms of value for money.

Read my review of software that allows me to watch TV shows on my PC for a one-time fee here.

The Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, VT – I Keep Coming Back

They say Vermont is a state of mind. That’s how I feel about Woodstock Inn. I discovered this charming finca back in the days when guests in the original old building shared a hall bathroom. My dad first introduced me to the inn, when we traveled from Connecticut to ski the local mountains – Mt. Tom, Suicide Six and Okemo.

The food, service, and atmosphere at the Woodstock Inn were so appealing that I chose to spend part of my honeymoon at the Inn during the height of Vermont’s vibrant foliage season.

This past week, the entire Hill team spent many memorable days at the renovated Woodstock Inn and Resort on Village Green. We were delighted to find that the usually quirky May weather was a bright and sunny 70 degrees during our stay. We had managed to hit a perfect spring at Woodstock. The lavender and white lilacs were in full bloom. Bright red tulips and yellow daffodils filled the inn’s lovely gardens.

Then there is the food. Although the nostalgic part of me misses the old world atmosphere of the original diner, the new Red Rooster is the talk of the town. We call it casually sophisticated, with the best service from all the staff.

We enjoyed a delicious dinner. Having tried many versions of salmon around the world, we all agreed that the Woodstock Inn served one of the best, recommended by our waiter. He also paired the perfect wine with our crab stuffed artichoke appetizers from his impressive list.

Each fresh fillet was crispy on the outside and hot, pink and juicy on the inside.

Although Woodstock is not on the water, the chef at each cafe told us that they can have fish caught that morning to serve tonight from vendors in Boston.

For those of us who rise with the sun, complimentary coffee is served in the library from 7-10 am daily.

Although the inn serves breakfast and lunch, my favorite breakfast (apart from the eggs benedict served in your room or on your terrace), is their three onion soup featured on our blog. We like this onion relish on a freshly baked bagel with Green Mountain coffee. Adding some smoked salmon is an added taste sensation.

For lunch, any homemade soup of the day makes the best comfort lunch.

There’s much more to the Woodstock Inn than the food and charming rooms and suites, some with glass-enclosed terraces for privacy, in-room dining, or as an additional office.

There is a complimentary gym and racquet club, with indoor pool, saunas, and full-service spa nearby via free shuttle. The Inn also offers a par 70 Trent Jones Sr. golf course and lessons. The gift shop has glassware by Simon Pearce and handmade furniture and pottery by Shackleton. A complimentary personal tour of these local attractions, as well as Billings Farm, can be arranged.

My favorite spot in the inn is reminiscent of the rich, wood-paneled English pub I remember from snowy winter nights. Richardson’ Tavern serves innovative cocktails and good pub grub starting at 4pm in a quiet but friendly atmosphere.

I know Norm’s favorite without asking. The English custom of serving afternoon tea and homemade chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies in the library every afternoon.

I suspect Maralyn appreciates the fast, up-to-date internet access in this classic old property, while retaining the traditional flavor of the original Woodstock Inn.

In any case, the Hill Team highly recommends the Woodstock Inn. It is always a delicious pleasure.

ISO 9001 vs. Six Sigma

I will not go into the history and background of each process management approach. Just google “Six Sigma” or “ISO 9001” to get your fair share of information. This article is going to go for the jugular on a subject that has been around me for a long time. I am not trained in Six Sigma but have always respected the program from afar and have done enough research on the subject to give a fairly educated opinion. I can appreciate your call to action and understand that there is a strong following, but I honestly feel that Six Sigma is a fad. It has been touted in best-selling business books, but that was 10 years ago.

Before I get off topic, let’s jump right into a bulleted list listing the problems with Six Sigma:

1. 3M, GE, Home Depot, Ford and other major companies are pulling out of Six Sigma because research shows that customer satisfaction and employee morale have suffered

A. On the other hand, customer satisfaction is a major theme of ISO 9001, as customer focus is one of the eight management principles of ISO 9001.

2. Over analyze

A. On the other hand, ISO 9001 simply suggests that your company should take a factual approach to decision making. This means making informed decisions and ensuring data and information is accurate and reliable enough and accessible to those who need it. ISO 9001 wants you to use facts but also balance them with experience and intuition.

3. Six Sigma and innovation do not coexist in the same world

A. Another important theme of ISO 9001 is continuous improvement. Unlike Six Sigma, ISO 9001 puts innovation squarely on the roadmap for organizational success.

4. It’s all about numbers, not customers

A. Once again, ISO 9001 makes it very clear throughout the standard that customer focus is a key element for business success.

5. Six Sigma = cost reduction. Surely, your business exists for more than just cutting costs.

A. ISO 9001 reminds us that in addition to reducing costs, we must also focus on mutually beneficial supplier relationships, leadership, people engagement and more.

6. Six Sigma = micromanagement

A. ISO 9001 is anything but micromanagement if implemented correctly by an experienced consultant. The standard only required six documented procedures. A smooth running ISO 9001 certified business is one that operates on its own positive and organic momentum.

7. It is elitist. Since when should a company only receive instructions from Black Belts? What happened to everyone in a company acting as a process improver?

A. Not the case with ISO 9001. Only one central role of Management Representative should be assigned. As for the rest of the employees, everyone is encouraged to do their part.

8. Does not incorporate information technology, a huge force that can impact processes

A. There is nothing specifically written in ISO 9001 that refers to information technology. However, several sections of the standard provide ample opportunity for IT to shine and play a central role.

9. Advocate for incremental improvements, not breakthroughs

A. One of my favorite management principles from ISO 9001 is continuous improvement.

10. Read any article on Six Sigma and you are bound to find a disclaimer section that addresses concerns or issues related to Six Sigma.

A. ISO 9001 does not generate the same type of backlash that Six Sigma is receiving

11. A Fortune 500 article stated that “of 58 large companies that have announced Six Sigma programs, 91% have lagged behind the S&P 500 since.”

A. On the other hand, a Harvard Business School working paper by David I. Levine and Michael W. Toffel published on January 18, 2010 concludes that ISO 9001 offers value, is not a fad, increases sales by about 10% and more. The authors mention “…the strength and consistency of our findings leads us to shift our own background in favor of the hypothesis that adoption of ISO 9001 is more beneficial than we had anticipated.”

12. It is based on arbitrary standards

A. 3.4 defects per million opportunities sounds pretty good to some industries that assume their products are life-threatening or just can’t stand any margin for error. But would the same strict standard apply to your typical contact center or service provider? Why does it need to be six standard deviations? This is not explained. Additionally, Six Sigma operates under the assumption that process data always conforms to a normal distribution model.

Hopefully this helps shed more light on the controversial issue of comparing Six Sigma to ISO 9001.

How Many Beer Bottles on the Wall: The Story of One Man’s Yeast Affection

In the early to mid 1980’s some of my friends and I got into Beer Tasting

Parting glass pub on Lake Avenue in Saratoga Springs.

There were only about 200 beers to be “tested” over a period of about 10 months.

times a week, this great gift to humanity was very feasible;

without requiring treatment in the emergency room. And do it we did. how wonderful

fact that the place was family owned and customers could feel part of the family just like the girls

and his mother served beers, mixed drinks and waited tables.

With everything from pizza and wings to steaks and lamb stew, the menu is first class.

and quite varied. I especially like the sweet potato fries and the

Meatloaf. Parking is pretty good compared to Broadway and there is a

parking within walking distance, making it a good meeting place for

newcomers to the busy center of Saratoga Springs. Of course The Parting Glass is “the” place to be

Valentine’s Day “Paddy’s” with lots of live music, dancing and lots of Guinness

we touch. Delicious corned beef and cabbage

specials are served in the week before the included big event.

You can visit their website at: www.PartingGlassPub.com

Owner Joan Desadora is said to have named the pub after the Irish song of the

same name. The following are the letters:

Of all the money I’ve spent

I have spent it in good company

And all the damage I ever did

Alas, it wasn’t for anyone but me

And everything I’ve done for lack of wit

To memory now I can’t remember

So fill my farewell glass

Good evening and joy be with you all.

If I had enough money to spend

And leisure to sit a while

There’s a fair maiden in town

That has my heart painfully deceived

Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips

I own her she has my heart captivated

So fill my farewell glass

Good evening and joy be with you all.

Oh all the comrades I ever had

They’re sorry I’m gone.

And all the loves I ever had

They would wish me one more day to stay

But since it falls to my luck

That I get up and you don’t

I will gently rise and gently call

Good evening and joy be with you all.
