Neuritis (Neuralgia) – Ayurvedic herbal treatment

Multiple neuritis is a degeneration of the peripheral nerves, also known as peripheral neuropathy or polyneuritis. This is characterized by a slow onset of altered sensations, sensory loss, and weakness and shrinkage of the muscles in the hands and feet. There are several causes for this, including nutritional deficiencies, metabolic and inflammatory conditions, and chronic intoxication due to alcohol, metals, and drugs.

In Ayurveda, the above symptoms are believed to be due to an altered “Vata” dosha. The disease process is believed to take place in two ways; one is a direct increase in “Vata” dosha, usually due to a quantitative decrease in “Dhatus” or body tissues, and the other is a disorientation of “Vata” dosha due to obstruction in normal channel pathways. The first type of disease process is called “Nir-upastambhit Vata-vyadhi” and the second type is called “Upastambhit Vata-vyadhi”. The two can be differentiated by a detailed medical history and careful observation of symptoms.

The treatment for the two types of diseases is totally different, in fact, quite contrasting. Nir-upastambhit vata is treated with Snehapaan (oral intake of oil or ghee), Abhyanga (oil massage), Shirobasti (prolonged medicated scalp lubrication treatment), and Anuvasan Basti (medicated lubricating enema). Bala (Sida cordifolia) oil, Mahanarayan oil (mainly containing Asparagus racemosus), and milk are some of the materials used for the medicated enema. Medicines used orally are: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Masha (Phaseolus mungo), Kohla, Abhrak Bhasma, Raupya Bhasma, Suvarna Bhasma, Chandan-Bala-Laxadi Oil, Shatavari kalpa, Kushmand-avaleha , Mahayogaraj Guggulu, and Vasant-kusumakar Rasa. Therefore, the general objective here is to build and strengthen the tissues of the body.

On the other hand, the treatment for Upa-stambhit vata aims to reduce or remove the blockage in the pathways of the normal vata dosha channels, reduce excessive growth of body tissues and cause “Anulomana” i.e. help to the vata dosha to circulate normally. Medicines used orally are: Triphala Guggulu, Yogaraj Guggulu, Maharasnadi Qadha, Dashamool Qadha, Gandharva Haritaki, Lashunadi Vati, Mahavata Vidhvansa, Ekangaveer Rasa, etc. The medicinal herbs used are: Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Dashmool (Ten Roots), Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Hinga (Ferula narthex), Bhallatak (Semicarpus anacardium), Triphala (Three Fruits) and Trikatu ( three spicy herbs).

A proper diet and lifestyle are recommended in both disease processes, which will help reduce symptoms and prevent further deterioration. It goes without saying that the treatment must be adapted to each patient according to the symptoms presented. Significantly, a carefully selected treatment regimen, if faithfully followed, gives amazing results, even with very chronic and debilitating diseases.
