Offshore Oil and Gas Safety Officer: Roles, Responsibilities, and Qualifications

The toolbox meeting is part of the daily routine of offshore oil and gas workers. The main reason is to identify the hazard and ensure that all safety precautions are in place before and during the execution of the works. This toolbox meeting is monitored and supervised by the Security Officer. The security officer is also another interesting job. For those who are interested in becoming one, below are the roles, responsibilities, and qualifications of the security officer.

  • Functions and responsibilities
    • Assist Management in the development and implementation of its HSE plans and advise on safety matters related to the works.
    • Coordinate and carry out inspections / audits of facilities and activities to ensure compliance with safe and good work practices in accordance with the legal requirements of the Factories and Machinery Law and all Safety Procedures.
    • Have the ability to communicate in written and spoken English and in the local language.
    • Give a safety presentation with the goal of enhancing the health, safety and environmental awareness of all workers.
    • Assist in the investigation of accidents, report and monitor their follow-up in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Ratings
    • Must have 5 years of work experience in supervisor position in related field of oil and gas industry.
    • Must possess a Recognized Diploma in an engineering discipline or a Recognized Diploma in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) or a training and assessment completed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and have a minimum of 3 years of working experience at OSH or at least 10 years of OSH work experience.
    • You must have attended the following local security courses conducted by the Security Training Institution:
      • Supervisory security
      • Accident investigation skill
      • First aid
      • Basic fire fighting and BA
    • You must have attended the following local courses relevant to your operation:
      • Survival at sea.
      • Crane and lifting operation.
      • Scaffolding inspection
      • Permission for work system
      • Certification course for authorized gas testers.
      • Helicopter Landing Officer (HLO)
    • You must possess knowledge and skill in:
      • Hazard and Effects Management Process / Risk Management
      • HSE Cases
      • Emergency response
      • Law, Regulation and Permits
      • HSE audit
