For as long as I can remember, I have used Benjamin Moore colors for myself and for my clients’ projects. They have a superior product range at an excellent price! Until a few years ago, I wasn’t very familiar with your new line of low-VOC and eco-friendly paints (VOC stands for volatile organic compounds), so you can imagine my doubts about using these eco-friendly products.

My first thought was “Oh no, my clients are going to ask me to use this paint because they saw it advertised as low or no voc paints, and since I’m the great designer that I am, I was going to have to please (or have a very good reason not to use them) “. So, I went out and bought a can of each, to test them, as I was working in a kitchen at the time that was in desperate need of new paint colors.

First off, the new green line of paints was priced slightly higher than Benjamin Moore’s “regular” primer, so I was glad they were providing a green product that didn’t break the bank like other green products. . There are three of them: Aura, Natura and Eco Spec… I applied each one to the walls of the kitchen I was renovating, and this is what I found …

• Will have: Aura paint is low in volatile organic compounds, low in odor and resistant to mold. The best thing I like about using Aura paint is that the paint contains the primer, so you don’t need to apply a primer to the walls first. That saves time and money, and pretty much offsets the higher cost of Aura paint, as you would have to purchase primer with your standard line base paints. The color did not saturate and it dried very quickly. If I had needed to add another coat, it probably could have been done just two hours after the first application.
• Nature: If you really are a VOC rigor, Benjamin Moore’s Natura paint does NOT contain VOCs, unlike Aura’s LOW VOC content. It was also practically odorless and dried very quickly, just like Aura paint. The Natura paint, when I applied it, did not cover well. It was like he was painting with watercolors! (Well, not too bad!) However, in defense of Natura, I applied a second and third coat, all in a span of about four hours, and was finally able to achieve the desired result. Remember though, Natura does NOT contain primer, therefore I had to prime the walls first. If you are going to paint a lot of walls or ceilings, you will have to buy a lot of Natura paint!
• Ecological Specifications: Eco Spec, being a commercial grade paint, was great. Benjamin Moore’s Eco Spec line of paints is volatile organic compound free, odorless, and mildew resistant. It is the paint of choice for most commercial interior jobs. Although I had to primer the wall first, the Eco Spec covered very well and was around $ 10 cheaper than Natura.

There you have it! Simply put, Benjamin Moore’s Aura paint was the best covering and least time consuming as the primer is already in the paint. If you personally believe that, or the job you are working on, requires the paint you use to be completely VOC free, Eco Spec is your best option!

Most US states and Canadian provinces have their own laws on the requirement of brakes on a towed trailer. The word trailer also applies to a vehicle that is towed behind a motorhome. These laws are normally based on the amount of weight being towed. One problem with this is that it might be legal to tow a 2,000 pound trailer without brakes in the state where you live, but as soon as you cross a state line from a border state, it is illegal to tow the same trailer without brakes. Add to this that your insurance company may not cover you in the event of an accident involving a trailer without a braking system. Again, the most important reason is for your safety and the safety of others.

The brakes on a tow vehicle or motorhome are designed by the vehicle manufacturer to stop the weight of that particular vehicle, not the extra weight being towed behind it. This additional weight adds a substantial increase to the distance required to stop safely.

Travel trailers and fifth wheels come equipped with electric brakes, and RV dealers educate the RV consumer on the requirements for adding electronic brake control to the tow vehicle. Some pop-up windows are ordered with brakes and some without them. Again, this is often based on the braking laws of the state you live in. Be aware that once you cross a state line, it could become illegal. My advice is that if you are going to buy a pop-up window, get one that has brakes.

The real culprit for ignoring braking laws is a motorhome towing a vehicle behind it. Most people assume that due to the size of the motorhome there is no need for a supplemental braking system on the towed vehicle, and RV dealerships sometimes do not communicate the requirement for a supplemental braking system.

For my part, I was guilty of towing a vehicle without a braking system for quite some time. A close call, while driving through a major city during rush hour, suddenly taught me how important it is. Another thing that surprises people is how much the vehicle they are towing actually weighs. Take your towed vehicle to a scale and have it weighed. Make sure you have everything that will be in it when you are towing it. After weighing it, double check to make sure the motorhome receiver is qualified to tow that amount of weight and is not exceeding any of the motorhome weight ratings like the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) . The GCWR is the maximum allowable weight of the fully loaded motorhome and fully loaded towed vehicle combined. Most RV chassis manufacturers base their GCWR on the assumption that a supplemental braking system is being used.

Regardless of which brake system best suits your individual needs, the important thing is that you have one. There are many reasons for having a braking system on your towed vehicle.

1) it’s the law
2) It may void your vehicle’s warranty.
3) You can cancel your insurance.
4) It will reduce the wear on RV brakes and other components.
