Beginning of a prestigious career in aircraft maintenance engineering

For anyone who is fed up with the sheep culture, which is currently rampant around the world, he or she should really look into a career in aviation. Our world, and even more so our country India, is teeming with engineers and doctors of all kinds. And in such a scenario, an aviation course like aircraft maintenance course might seem like an interesting option.

Aircraft maintenance engineering certainly sounds like just another branch of engineering, but luckily it’s not.

Now that we have an exciting and prestigious career option ahead of us, let’s see what exactly it consists of.

First things first, it is very important to understand that an aircraft maintenance engineer is not an aircraft engineer. The latter is a branch of engineering that is commonly known as aerospace engineering and is a 4-year degree course. AME on the other hand is a 3 year course, upon completion you do not get a degree but a license.

An aircraft maintenance engineer assists in the maintenance, repair, rebuilding, and servicing of aircraft at a technical level. A daily part of Ames’ job is to conduct aircraft overhaul programs and assess the condition of aircraft and their engines. Only a maintenance engineer can certify whether or not an aircraft is fit to fly. Without the permission and certification of an AME, an aircraft is not allowed to take off.

Let us now move on to the eligibility and requirements:

  • A 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics is a prerequisite for the entrance exam, with at least 50% added.

  • A diploma in any branch of engineering.

  • Degree with 10+2 in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

To start a career as an aircraft maintenance engineer, you must obtain an AME license, which requires you to appear in a certification exam conducted by the Indian Aeronautical Society. However, to clear that up, he needs to enroll in a DGCA approved aircraft maintenance training institute as only they can impart the necessary knowledge and experience to him.

The AME exam consists of 2 parts, which are written exams and an oral and practical exam.

The written exam consists of 4 tests. These are:

  • rules and regulations

  • General Engineering and Workshop Practices

  • Airframes, engines and general systems

  • Airframe/Engine/Specific system as desired by the candidate

The oral-practical test requires candidates to demonstrate their skills and knowledge in aircraft maintenance. This test involves an industry expert and requires a minimum pass rate of 70%.
