This article debunks the common notion that a Las Vegas vacation can be an expensive affair. Of course, if you’re interested in ‘Hangover’ stuff, you’re in the wrong place. Indians are not a minority in the United States (my Hispanic lab partner has pointed this out many times) and it would be fair to say that there are some Indians in every graduate school in the country. The views in this post may better resonate with this small Las Vegas tourist demographic, although this can mean a bigger profit for less money for anyone.

Some general tips for planning:

1. Book air tickets to McCurran International Airport; the strip is a short shuttle bus ride away ($ 8 each way).

2. Travel on weekdays to get cheap deals on airline tickets and hotels. Stay on the strip for proximity to the epicenter of Vegasland. When my friend’s parents were visiting her, she stayed for $ 30 a night at the Stratosphere on the Strip. Plan to be in Las Vegas for at least two full days.

3. Be prepared to walk a lot, the best way to explore the casinos. I like to leave early at night from my hotel and walk down the main avenue and take the bus back to the hotel. Following these types of hours, while in Las Vegas, will allow you to enjoy all the glorious nightlife and also escape the brutal Nevada sun.

4. Restaurants are often grouped together: Subway ($ 5 per foot of veggies) might be the best option if you’re not picky about cooking. It’s hard not to notice a three-wheeled auto-rickshaw on the outskirts of ‘India Masala’ on Las Vegas Boulevard. It was mostly pointless hitting the various buttons, and I don’t recall making any money.

What about the free / inexpensive things you can do at the casinos?

1. Venetian – My ten stars for this casino for maintaining a smoke-free environment. Gondola rides on the blue-tinted waterways cost $ 15 or less per person. Strolling through the canal shops within walled alleys is relaxing. Tao the nightclub sees meandering lines of crowds outside, even on weekdays.

2. MGM: Although not one of the newest anymore, it still attracts so many people. The lion enclosure becomes even more entertaining during feeding hours. Rainforest coffee offers nothing different than many others in the country.

3. Stratosphere – Located on the edge of the strip, the view from the 103rd floor observation deck is breathtaking. Unfortunately, this is not free! Some rides at the top for the adrenaline junkies.

4. Bellagio – Plan your trip so you don’t miss the dancing fountains, both day and night, if you can. It is impressive, both during the day and at night. I don’t know if it’s the song selections that Bellagio for these shows or just me, they invariably get me excited. His tulip garden is also a delight.

5. Mirage: I’ve never been here, but they say its volcanic eruption show is unique.

6. Palace of the Caesers – Women have free entry to the fountains in the Garden of the Gods!

7. Circus Circus – Some pretty good circus acts here every day for free.

These are only seven; I have fifty more reasons to return.
