Facts and myths about hair loss

Having attractive hair is a key component of our overall “package” along with fair skin, a bright smile, and a stylish ensemble. This is the paradigm of our appearance-conscious society. However, when we start to lose it, we start to feel like our overall appearance has been compromised.

If you are starting to go bald, know that it may be genetic and can come from either side of your family. If the hair loss gene is evident through the glowing dome of a relative or family member, it likely resides in you as well.

My brother spent much of his adult life under a welder’s helmet and has far more challenges to madness than our father. However, wearing a hat does not cause hair loss. Unless the head wear is so tight that it restricts blood flow, thus cutting off circulation to the hair follicles, that is not the cause of your loss.

  1. Any hair care product you use won’t make your hair fall out, so you can use hair gel, mousse, and hairspray…all to the delight of hair product retailers.
  2. Do not try headstands to promote blood flow to the hair follicle, it will not work and may give you a headache. (Do some people really do this?)
  3. Cutting your hair does not make it grow back thicker. This is a misconception. When you cut your hair, you blunt the ends, giving it the appearance of not only being darker, but also thicker. When hair grows naturally, the ends taper and appear finer and lighter. This is true for hair anywhere on your body.
  4. If you notice that your hair falls out when you blow-dry it, this may be due to the heat from the blow dryer. A blow dryer not only plumps up your hair, but it can also dry it out, burn it, and cause it to break. In this case, the hair grows back and the hair loss is not permanent.
  5. Brushing your hair can cause breakage and damage. It is better to use a comb. Brushing can also lead you down the path of baldness and split ends.
  6. Daily or excessive washing of your hair does not cause hair loss or the products you use when you wash it. It is recommended to wash your hair 3 times a week but washing more will not cause hair loss.
  7. Chemical hair coloring products will damage your hair if not used correctly, but they won’t cause you to lose your hair.
  8. Stress can cause hair loss if you have experienced, for example, surgery or some other traumatic event for your system. Stress can temporarily stop the growth of hair follicles. Eliminating your stress trigger will get your hair growth back on track.
  9. A hormonal imbalance can cause temporary hair loss, as is common in women after pregnancy. If it happens to you, the important thing to remember is that the hair will grow back.
  10. Hormones themselves are not related to hair loss, but be careful if you are a bodybuilder taking anabolic steroids. The chemical component in steroids will speed up hair loss and the recovery of the lost follicles will take years!

It seems that genetics is the leader when it comes to hair loss. What to do when your hair falls out?… Accept it. Shave it, stuff it, weave it, get a wig, or leave it alone. Whatever you choose to do, make it work for you and forget about everyone else. Your hair is not who you are!
