How to Maintain Your Waste Disposal Unit in 7 Steps

A waste disposal unit is a device that sits under a sink to grind up food waste that might not otherwise go through the pipes. A waste disposal unit comes in handy when it comes to keeping unpleasant odors out of your garbage cans and kitchen. However, you must take proper care of that unit to keep it functional. Here are 7 easy steps to do it.

1. Avoid putting hard objects in your garbage disposal. Hard bones, unpopped popcorn kernels, crabs, hard shrimp shells are things that can dull the grinder and make it less efficient. However, each waste disposal unit has its own capacity for the hard materials it might receive. Generally, the more expensive the device, the more hardness it has. A list of objects to avoid should be included in the instruction manual. Anything that is not suitable for your garbage disposal should go to the dumpster.

2. Keep stringy or starchy items out of the disposer. Both could seriously clog the waste removal unit. Here is a list of items you should avoid throwing in the trash:

  • potato skins
  • artichokes
  • banana peels
  • coffee grains
  • celery
  • onion skin
  • fruit pits and hard seeds
  • eggshells

4. Do not put hard items or garbage in the garbage disposal. Some items just aren’t destined for a disposal unit. Here are some examples of things to avoid throwing in the trash:

  • Utensils
  • glass, nails, screws
  • cloth, rags, thong, sponges
  • twist ties, rubber bands
  • toy
  • fat
  • hatred

5. Cut large food scraps into smaller pieces. If the item is too large for disposal, cut it into smaller pieces and place them in the disposal unit one at a time. Don’t try to put in a large amount at once.

6. Use cold water to push debris down the drain. Run cold water for 30 to 60 seconds after grinding the debris. Keep the disposer on while the water is running. Cold water not only helps the debris go down easier, it also prevents the disposal unit from overheating. NEVER use hot water as it can melt the fat and once the fat re-solidifies it could block the drain.

7. Clean your waste disposal unit regularly. Use a paper towel to clean the inner side of the rubber leading to removal. Make sure the unit is turned off. To remove debris buildup from the edges of the shredder, use ice. Throw a few ice cubes down the drain while the disposal is running. For a fresh scent, put in some orange peel or any citrus peel.
