Before playing blackjack, learn the game’s basic rules. Blackjack is played on a semicircular table, usually covered with felt cloth. Depending on the dealer, there can be up to seven players. Each player places their bet on a spot on the table, using casino chips. The dealer’s role is to deal the cards according to casino protocol. The dealer will collect lost player bets and pay off the winning player’s bets, and keep the game moving.
The objective of the game is to beat the dealer’s hand. In other words, if you have an Ace, you beat the dealer’s hand. If the dealer has a jack or a ten, you win. The best possible hand in blackjack is an Ace and a face card, otherwise known as an “ace-face”. This is the most valuable hand and is called a “Blackjack.” However, the dealer can beat a player with a hand like this, but it’s highly unlikely. In such a situation, you should always play conservatively and try to avoid “busting.”
First, you need to remember that you’re playing against the dealer. When the dealer has a hand with the same total as yours, you win. If the dealer’s hand is higher, you lose your bet, regardless of what kind of hand you have. If you have the same total as the dealer, you’ll get the same card value as he does. You also need to make sure to know the rules for when you want to make a blackjack bet.
Another important rule to remember is to split pairs if your hand total is lower than 21. Pairs and aces may be split once, but they can’t be split again. You’ll lose if you “bust” when the dealer has blackjack, and you’ll lose your bet. In most cases, the dealer will hit on your hands and make a ‘bust’ hand for you.
