The Anatomy of Cutting the Golf Ball

The Anatomy of Cutting the Golf Ball

To slice a golf ball (impart left-to-right flight for a right-handed golfer), you must hit the golf ball in a way that causes a clockwise rotation. The more spectacular the rotation, the more spectacular or worse the golf cut will be.

For the context of this article, I will speak from the swing and the perspective of a right-handed golfer.

In defining the golf court, there are a couple of basic characteristics for the flight of the ball. First, there is the cut that may initially start down the target line and then move off the line in a left-to-right motion. This type of cut tells us that the swing path was traveling along the intended target line, but at impact the clubface was left open and did not return to the square position at impact. Generally, this type of golf cut does not produce as severe a left-to-right movement of the golf ball, since the swing path itself did not cut the ball from the outside in. This type of golf ball slicing heals more easily. And it can usually be done with a little work on the golfer’s setup, alignment, or grip.

The second type of golf cut is the one that affects the vast majority of beginner and high handicap golfers. This is the type of cut that produces the ‘banana ball’ type of flight and is very uncontrollable and frustrating.

The attributes of this type of cut to the golfer are that the ball will initially start to the left of the target line, indicating that the swing path was incorrect from the start. When the ball starts immediately to the left of the target line, that tells you that your swing path has come from outside to inside.

Now, having done that with your swing doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you’re going to cut the golf ball, but it sure has made it much easier for a cut to occur. Now combine the outside-in swing path with an open clubface at impact and you now have a golf shot that starts on the left and has the double hit of a cutting swing path through the golf ball. golf and an open clubface. With these two laws of physics in your favor; you just produced a beautiful slice. One that only a proud father could love! You know what I’m talking about. The ball that travels a total distance of 300 yards, but only about 220 yards farther down the field (if you can find it all).

A golfer who is plagued with this type of golf cut will require a little more work to correct this because their basic swing is flawed and needs to be corrected. But it’s important to understand what makes the ball do what it does in your golf swing and the mechanics of your golf swing. Once you understand the 9 Rules of Ball Flight, you’ll be able to better understand what’s producing the ball flight you’re seeing in your swing, and as such, you’ll be able to address and adjust it more quickly to ensure success.
